Verzenio (abemaciclib) is an oral targeted therapy used to treat hormone receptor (HR)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative breast cancer in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs called CDK4/6 inhibitors (cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 inhibitors), which work by blocking enzymes that drive cancer cell growth and division. verzenio price
Verzenio is used in four settings:
- With endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) as adjuvant treatment for node-positive, high-risk early breast cancer
- With an aromatase inhibitor as initial endocrine-based therapy for advanced or metastatic breast cancer
- With fulvestrant for advanced or metastatic breast cancer after disease progression on endocrine therapy
- As monotherapy for advanced or metastatic breast cancer after disease progression on endocrine therapy and prior chemotherapy in the metastatic setting verzenio price
Unlike some other CDK4/6 inhibitors, Verzenio is taken twice daily (rather than once daily) and is the only CDK4/6 inhibitor approved for use as a single agent. It is taken orally with or without food. Verzenio is available as 50 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg tablets.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effects of Verzenio (occurring in 20% or more of patients across clinical trials) include:
- Diarrhea (most common; occurs in up to 90% of patients across studies; grade 3 in approximately 13%)
- Low white blood cell counts (neutropenia)
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Infections
- Fatigue
- Low red blood cell counts (anemia)
- Low white blood cell counts (leukopenia)
- Decreased appetite
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Hair thinning or hair loss (alopecia)
- Low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia).
Most side effects are manageable with dose adjustment, supportive care, or temporarily stopping treatment. Side effects tend to be most frequent during the first month of treatment, particularly diarrhea. Older adults (65 years and older) may be more likely to experience certain side effects.
Verzenio may cause fertility problems in males, which may affect the ability to father a child.
